Temple of Tooth Ticket Guide: Visiting the Sacred Relic
The Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is the spiritual epicenter of Sri Lanka. Located in the royal palace complex of the former Kandyan Kingdom, it houses the most important Buddhist relic on the island: a tooth belonging to the Buddha himself. Visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site is a profound cultural experience.
Ticket Information and Entry
As of recent updates, the entrance fee for foreign nationals is 2000 LKR (approximately $6-$7 USD, though currency fluctuations occur).
- Where to Buy: Tickets are purchased at the automated machines or ticket counters located near the main entrance gates, before you pass through security.
- Audio Guides: Audio guides are available for a small additional fee and are highly recommended to understand the complex history and rituals of the temple.
- Shoe Keepers: You must remove your shoes before entering the temple proper. There is a designated shoe-keeping area where you will be expected to leave a small tip (around 100 LKR) upon collection.
The Strict Dress Code
This is one of the most strictly enforced dress codes in Sri Lanka. Security will turn you away if you are dressed inappropriately.
- Both Men and Women: Shoulders and knees must be completely covered. No shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops.
- Clothing Color: While not mandatory, it is highly respectful (and appreciated by locals) to wear white or light colors when visiting.
- Hats/Caps: Must be removed upon entering the temple grounds.
Experiencing the Pooja (Offerings)
The temple is peaceful during the day, but it truly comes alive during the daily poojas (offerings or prayers). These happen three times a day: dawn, midday, and evening.
The evening pooja (around 6:30 PM) is the most popular time to visit. Traditional drummers play intensely in the main courtyard, creating an electric atmosphere. During these times, the room housing the tooth relic is opened (though the tooth itself remains hidden inside seven golden caskets). Devotees queue for hours just to walk past the open door and offer lotus flowers.
Kandy city center can be highly congested, especially during pooja times. To avoid the stress of finding parking or hailing a tuk-tuk in the chaos, consider using a pre-booked taxi service to drop you off conveniently near the temple entrance.
