Tea Plantations Nuwara Eliya: The Heart of Ceylon Tea

Nestled high in the central highlands at an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters, Nuwara Eliya is the beating heart of Sri Lanka's tea industry. Surrounded by emerald-green mountains blanketed in meticulously manicured tea bushes, this region produces some of the finest "Ceylon Tea" in the world.

Why is it Called "Little England"?

During the British colonial era, Scottish and English planters discovered the cool, misty climate of Nuwara Eliya was a perfect retreat from the sweltering coastal heat—and ideal for growing tea. They built Tudor-style bungalows, established a golf course, the gentleman's Hill Club, and even a racecourse. Driving into town today still feels like stepping into a peculiar, tropical version of a British village.

Best Tea Factories to Visit

No trip to Nuwara Eliya is complete without understanding how tea goes from leaf to cup. Factory tours usually take 30-45 minutes and end with a much-needed tasting session.

  • Pedro Tea Estate: Located very close to town, this historic factory still uses 19th-century engineering. It specializes in light teas. Because processing happens at night, day tours show the machinery but not active rolling.
  • Damro Labookellie Tea Estate (formerly Mackwoods): One of the oldest and largest estates in Sri Lanka. It offers comprehensive free tours, excellent chocolate cake in their café, and iconic "Hollywood" style letters on the hillside perfect for photos.
  • Blue Field Tea Gardens: A popular stop on the scenic route up to Nuwara Eliya, offering insightful tours and a great restaurant with panoramic views.

The Tea Pluckers

The landscape is dotted with Tamil tea pluckers, predominantly women, carrying large baskets or bags on their backs. Their incredible dexterity allows them to selectively pick only the "two leaves and a bud" necessary for premium tea. If you stop to take photographs, it is customary to offer a small tip for their time.

Getting There

The roads winding up to Nuwara Eliya from Kandy or Colombo consist of endless hairpin bends. While beautiful, they can cause motion sickness. Hiring a private car and driver allows you to travel at your own pace, stop at waterfalls along the way (like Ramboda Falls), and arrive feeling fresh.
