Surf Camps Sri Lanka: Ride the Perfect Wave

With warm tropical waters year-round and consistent swells, Sri Lanka has quietly become one of the premier surfing destinations in Asia. Whether you are a total novice looking for a structured learning environment or an intermediate rider wanting a dedicated surf community, booking a stay at one of the island's many surf camps is an incredible experience.

Beginner Heaven: Weligama (South Coast)

If you have never touched a surfboard, Weligama is where you must go (best from November to April).

  • The Environment: Weligama is a massive, spanning sandy bay. The waves here are gentle, long, and break over a soft sandy bottom, making it incredibly forgiving for wipeouts.
  • The Camps: The town is packed with high-quality surf camps ranging from budget backpacker spots to luxury boutique surf-and-yoga retreats. They provide boards, rash guards, and intense, dedicated instruction.

The Legend: Arugam Bay (East Coast)

When the South Coast gets too rainy (May to September), the surf community migrates to the East Coast to the legendary town of Arugam Bay.

  • The Breaks: A-Bay is famous for its long right-hand point breaks. While there are beginner spots (like Peanut Farm or Whiskey Point), the main point caters to advanced surfers and international competitions.
  • The Vibe: Surf camps here lean heavily into a laid-back, bohemian, party-at-night atmosphere.

Transporting Your Gear

If you are bringing your own longboard, traveling around the island is difficult. They do not fit in standard tuk-tuks, and buses will not take them. To get you and your board safely to the coast from the airport, pre-book a dedicated spacious surf-van transfer.
