Beginner Heaven: Weligama (South Coast)

If you have never touched a surfboard, Weligama is where you must go (best from November to April).

The Legend: Arugam Bay (East Coast)

When the South Coast gets too rainy (May to September), the surf community migrates to the East Coast to the legendary town of Arugam Bay.

• The Breaks: A-Bay is famous for its long right-hand point breaks. While there are beginner spots (like Peanut Farm or Whiskey Point), the main point caters to advanced surfers and international competitions.

Transporting Your Gear

If you are bringing your own longboard, traveling around the island is difficult. They do not fit in standard tuk-tuks, and buses will not take them. To get you and your board safely to the coast from the airport, pre-book a dedicated spacious surf-van transfer.
