Sigiriya Rock Fortress Guide: Tickets and Climbing Tips

Sigiriya, the ancient rock fortress, is arguably Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark. Rising nearly 200 meters from the jungle, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a marvel of ancient engineering and art. Here is your guide to conquering the Lion Rock.

The History

Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, he chose this massive rock for his capital. He built a palace on top and decorated the sides with colorful frescoes. The entrance is guarded by two massive lion paws—the remains of a gigantic lion statue.

Practical Information 2026

  • Ticket Price: Approx. $30 - $35 USD for foreign tourists (check current rates at gate).
  • Opening Hours: 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry around 4 PM).
  • Duration: Allow 2-3 hours for the climb and exploring the gardens.

Climbing Tips

1. Go Early!

Arrive right at 7:00 AM. The heat gets intense by mid-morning, and the crowds arrive by 9:00 AM. An early start means a cooler climb and better photos.

2. Dress Code

Unlike temples, there is no strict dress code, but modest, comfortable activewear is best. Wear sturdy shoes—there are many stairs!

3. Bring Water

There are no shops on the rock stairs or at the summit. Bring plenty of water with you.

4. Don't Miss the Frescoes

About halfway up, a spiral staircase leads to the famous "Sigiriya Damsels" frescoes. No photography is allowed here to preserve the ancient paint.

Pidurangala Rock: The Alternative

For a budget alternative (approx. $3 USD) and the best view OF Sigiriya, climb the adjacent Pidurangala Rock at sunrise. It's a tougher scramble but worth it.
