Ramboda Falls Visit: A Spectacular Hill Country Stop
The drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is arguably one of the most scenic routes in Sri Lanka, winding endlessly upwards through vibrant green tea plantations. About halfway into the journey into the central highlands, you encounter one of the route's absolute highlights: the magnificent Ramboda Falls.
Understanding the Falls
Plunging from a height of exactly 109 meters (358 feet), Ramboda is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is uniquely formed by three distinct tiers or sections, fed by the Panna Oya, a tributary of the Kothmale Oya.
- The Middle Fall: This is the section most tourists see, as it is conveniently located right next to the A5 highway and the Ramboda Falls Hotel viewing deck.
- The Lower Fall: Located beneath the road bridge, requiring a short walk down to the river basin.
- The Upper Fall: The most impressive tier, but reaching it requires a steep, sweaty climb.
The Hike to the Top Tier
If you just view the middle section from the road, you are missing the best part of Ramboda Falls. To reach the massive upper cascade, look for the small ticket office (Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority) located slightly uphill from the bridge.
The entrance fee is nominal (around 50 LKR). The hike is a steep, roughly 1.5-kilometer climb up uneven stone steps carved into the mountainside. The trail leads through dense forest, and while challenging, it takes less than 30 minutes. The reward is a completely unobstructed, thundering view of the top tier, with a refreshing mist that cools you down instantly.
Nearby Attractions
Because you have to stop at Ramboda, it is the perfect place to bundle other hill country activities:
- Blue Field Tea Factory: Located just a few kilometers past the falls, offering excellent free tours explaining the entire tea production process, followed by a cup of their finest brew.
- Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple: A significant Hindu temple perched on a hill above Ramboda, offering sweeping panoramic views of the cascading Kotmale Reservoir below.
The winding mountain roads leading to Ramboda require a skilled driver. To enjoy the jaw-dropping scenery without white-knuckling the steering wheel, booking a private driver or comfortable taxi service for your journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is highly recommended.
