Mirissa Whale Watching: Season Dates and Tour Options
Mirissa is one of the best places on Earth to see the largest animal to ever live: the Blue Whale. It's also a hotspot for Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Here is what you need to know for a successful trip.
Best Time for Whale Watching
The whale watching season in Mirissa runs from November to April. The seas are calmest during this time, making it easier to spot whales and reducing seasickness.
Note: From May to October, the seas are rough, and trips often don't run. For whale watching during these months, head to Trincomalee on the East Coast.
Choosing an Ethical Operator
Not all boats are equal. Some chase the whales too aggressively. Look for operators accredited by the WCA (World Cetacean Alliance) or those known for responsible practices (e.g., Raja & the Whales).
- Good signs: They don't crowd the whales, they cut engines when close, and they adhere to speed limits.
What to Expect
- Start Time: Early! Boats usually leave harbor around 6:30 AM.
- Duration: 3 to 5 hours, depending on where the whales are.
- Cost: Approx. $50 - $70 USD per person.
- Seasickness: The Indian Ocean can be choppy. Take a pill the night before or 1 hour before boarding if you are prone to motion sickness.
