The Golden Hour Flight

Balloon flights operate exclusively at dawn, usually launching from the Dambulla/Kandalama area before the tropical heat creates unstable thermals.

• As you silently drift upward, the mist clears to reveal the vast expanse of the jungle canopy.
• Depending on the wind direction, you may float directly over the massive Kandalama Reservoir, catch glimpses of the golden Dambulla Buddha statue, or even see elephants moving through the trees below.

When to Book

Hot air ballooning is highly weather-dependent. The season typically runs from November to April when the skies over the Cultural Triangle are clear and the winds are calm. Flights are almost entirely suspended during the monsoon season for obvious safety reasons.

Early Morning Logistics

Because the balloons launch before dawn, you will need to leave your hotel in total darkness—often around 4:30 AM. Do not rely on your hotel finding a tuk-tuk at that hour.
