Hikkaduwa Scuba Diving: Exploring Sri Lanka's Coral Reefs
Hikkaduwa is not just famous for its vibrant nightlife and surfing; it's also one of Sri Lanka's most accessible and rewarding scuba diving destinations. Home to the first marine sanctuary in the country and a fascinating array of shipwrecks, diving here offers something for everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned pros.
The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary
The shallow fringing reef off Hikkaduwa is a designated National Park. While it suffered from bleaching in past decades, it is recovering and remains a fantastic spot for both snorkeling and introductory dives. In these shallow, sunlit waters, you'll encounter enormous, friendly green sea turtles, colorful parrotfish, distinct moray eels, and schools of vibrant reef fish.
Wreck Diving Capital
For advanced divers, Hikkaduwa's real draw lies slightly further offshore. The area is renowned for its accessible shipwrecks.
- The Conch (SS Conch): The most famous wreck in the area. Sunk in 1903, this 3,000-ton oil tanker sits in about 22 meters of water. The wreck is broken in two and is heavily encrusted with corals, attracting large schools of snappers and groupers. It's a fantastic, atmospheric dive.
- The Earl of Shaftesbury: A 19th-century sailing ship resting at a deeper 15 meters on a sandy bottom, offering a different historical perspective.
Getting Certified
Hikkaduwa is an ideal place to get your PADI Open Water certification. The dive schools along the main strip are professional, highly experienced, and often cheaper than in Europe or Australia. The calm conditions during the peak season make learning stress-free.
When to Dive
The dive season in Hikkaduwa coincides with the dry season on the southwest coast, running from November to April. During this time, the sea is calm, and underwater visibility is at its best (often exceeding 20 meters). From May to October, the monsoon makes diving unsafe, and most dive centers close or relocate to the East Coast.
Travel Tip
If you are traveling with heavy diving gear, lugging it onto public transport is a nightmare. Book a comfortable taxi from the airport to Hikkaduwa to ensure your expensive equipment arrives safely and you start your diving holiday relaxed.
