Elephant Orphanage Pinnawala: What to Know
Located halfway between Colombo and Kandy, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of Sri Lanka's most famous, yet heavily debated, tourist attractions. Founded in 1975 to care for abandoned baby elephants found in the jungle, it now houses one of the largest captive herds in the world.
The River Bathing Spectacle
The absolute highlight of a visit to Pinnawala is the daily bathing ritual. Twice a day (usually around 10 AM and 2 PM), the entire herd—dozens of elephants ranging from massive tuskers to tiny babies—is marched down the village street to the Maha Oya river.
- Watching them splash, roll, and socialize in the wide river from the terrace of a nearby cafe is a spectacular photographic opportunity.
- You can also witness the feeding of the baby elephants with giant milk bottles within the orphanage grounds.
The Ethical Conversation
It is important to note that Pinnawala is an orphanage/breeding facility, not a wild sanctuary. Some adults are kept chained, and handlers (mahouts) use bullhooks. While they do vital conservation work, modern eco-tourists often prefer the totally hands-off Jeep safaris in Minneriya or Udawalawe to see elephants in the wild.
Planning Your Route
Pinnawala is located slightly off the main Colombo-Kandy highway. If you want to time your arrival perfectly to catch the river bath without the stress of navigating rural roads, booking a direct airport taxi or intercity cab is the most efficient method.
