Batticaloa Lagoon Boat Rides: A Peaceful Eastern Escape
Tucked away on the East Coast, Batticaloa (often just called 'Batti') is a town defined by water. Surrounded by three massive, interconnected lagoons and the Indian Ocean, it operates at a slower, deeply peaceful pace compared to the rest of the island. To truly understand Batticaloa, you have to get out on the water.
Exploring the Lagoons
The Batticaloa Lagoon is the central feature of the district. Hiring a traditional wooden boat or a small motorized craft for a sunset lagoon tour is the quintessential Batti experience.
- Bird Watching: The lagoon is a haven for birdlife. You'll glide past dense mangrove forests and tiny islands, spotting kingfishers, eagles, cormorants, and colorful waterbirds.
- Traditional Fishing: Watch local fishermen casting massive circular nets or using traditional canoe-like boats (oruwas) with outriggers. The pace of life here feels untouched by modern tourism.
- The Legend of the Singing Fish: Batticaloa is famous for its "singing fish." According to legend, on full moon nights between April and September, if you dip an oar into the lagoon near the Kallady Bridge and hold the other end to your ear, you can hear a distinct, musical plucking sound.
Beyond the Boat Ride
Once you're back on land, Batticaloa has a charming, slightly faded historical charm.
- Batticaloa Fort: A small but well-preserved fort initially built by the Portuguese in 1628 and later captured by the Dutch. It sits right on the edge of the lagoon, offering great views.
- Kallady Beach: While not as famous as Trincomalee, Kallady offers a long, straight stretch of golden sand facing the open ocean. It's beautiful, rugged, and usually completely deserted.
Getting There
Like much of the East Coast, Batticaloa is best visited between May and October. It is a significant distance from Colombo or the southern beaches. If you're building an East Coast itinerary, booking an intercity taxi allows you to combine Batticaloa with destinations like Arugam Bay or Trincomalee comfortably.
