Anuradhapura Ancient Sites: Unveiling Sri Lanka's History

Anuradhapura is the spiritual and historical soul of Sri Lanka. Serving as the island's capital for over a millennium starting from the 4th century BC, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Today, the sprawling ruins of this ancient metropolis form a captivating UNESCO World Heritage site.

Must-See Historical Marvels

The site is vast, and navigating it requires a plan. Here are the absolute must-sees:

• Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi: The most sacred site in Anuradhapura. This fig tree is grown from a cutting brought from Bodh Gaya in India, the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted in 288 BC, it is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date.
• Ruwanwelisaya Stupa: A colossal, gleaming white dome built in 140 BC by King Dutugemunu. Standing majestically amidst manicured lawns, it is a breathtaking sight, especially when surrounded by hundreds of chanting monks holding lotus flowers.
• Abhayagiri Vihara & Jetavanaramaya: Massive brick stupas that, at the time of their construction, were among the tallest structures in the ancient world, rivaling the pyramids of Giza in volume.

How to Explore the Ruins

The ancient city is spread over a huge area (about 40 square kilometers). Walking between all the sites in the tropical heat is not feasible.

• Bicycles: A very popular option. The terrain is flat, and many guesthouses rent bikes.
• Tuk-Tuks: You can hire a tuk-tuk driver for the day to shuttle you between the major sites.

Respect and Etiquette

Anuradhapura is an active religious site, not just a museum. You must dress conservatively (knees and shoulders covered, preferably in white). You will also be required to take off your shoes and hats before entering the sacred areas around the stupas and the Bodhi tree. The stone paths can get searing hot by midday, so bringing a pair of thick socks to wear around the ruins is a pro traveler tip.

Situated in the north-central plains, the drive from Colombo takes about 4-5 hours. While train travel is an option, a private, air-conditioned taxi is the most comfortable way to reach the Cultural Triangle, allowing you to arrive ready to explore the ancient wonders.
