Shared taxis — known locally as 'taxi in taxi' or share taxis — operate on fixed routes between towns, picking up multiple passengers along the way. They offer a cost-effective alternative to private hire.

Routes like Colombo–Kandy, Colombo–Galle, and Kandy–Nuwara Eliya have established shared taxi services that depart when full. These vehicles are often 7-seater vans or minivans.

Shared taxis depart from specific stands — Colombo's Pettah area for southern routes, Kandy's main bus stand area for central routes. Departure times are flexible based on passenger load.

Private taxi hire offers the advantage of direct routing, door-to-door service, and a departure time of your choice. For groups of 3+, private hire often costs the same as or less than shared per head.
