Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka 2026/27: Month-by-Month & Monsoon Guide
July 1, 2026Travel Desk
The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends entirely on where you want to go. Unlike many countries, Sri Lanka has two separate monsoon seasons affecting different coasts — meaning there is always somewhere beautiful and dry to visit. December to March is the peak season for most travellers, but the east coast, ancient cities, and hill country have their own ideal windows.
Sri Lanka's Two Monsoon Seasons Explained
Sri Lanka's weather is shaped by two monsoons that strike different parts of the island at different times:
South-West Monsoon (Yala) — May to July. Brings heavy rain to the west coast, south coast, and central highlands. Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Nuwara Eliya all get wetter.
North-East Monsoon (Maha) — October to January. Affects the east and north coasts — Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Jaffna, Batticaloa.
The critical insight: when the west is wet, the east is dry — and vice versa. Sri Lanka is a year-round destination if you're flexible about which coast you visit.
Month-by-Month Guide
December – March: Best Overall — West & south coasts dry and sunny. Peak season for Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Yala. Whale watching peaks Nov–April. Crowded and pricier; book ahead.
January: Finest month island-wide. Cool hill country, calm seas, vibrant beaches. Duruthu Perahera festival in Colombo (full moon).
February: Excellent. Whale watching at its peak off Mirissa. Valentine season. Navam Perahera in Colombo (February full moon).
March: Still excellent on the west/south. Seas start picking up by late March. Hill country perfect.
April: Transitional. First two weeks fine; late April sees the south-west monsoon approach. Tamil New Year (April 13/14) — cultural festivities island-wide but transport books up fast.
May – July: South-west monsoon. West coast, south coast, and Colombo are wetter. East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is DRY and excellent. Surfing season begins at Arugam Bay.
August – September: East coast at its best — Trincomalee beaches pristine, Pigeon Island clear. Minneriya Elephant Gathering peaks (Aug–Oct). Kandy Esala Perahera (full moon, July/August) — Sri Lanka's greatest festival.
October: Shoulder season. East coast winds down; north-east monsoon approaches. Ancient cities (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa) still good. West coast starts drying out.
November: North-east monsoon peaks on the east/north. Colombo and the west coast recovering. Whale watching season begins (Mirissa). Brief inter-monsoonal rains possible island-wide.
December: West coast dry season begins. Christmas and New Year peak — prices highest of the year. Book 3–6 months ahead for popular spots.
